She recognises someone else who known magic and would understand her wish to leave life in her own way. In the movie, Armande is the elderly landlady of the shop that becomes the Chocolaterie Maya,. In both, Armande is an elderly widow, living alone and secretly diabetic, though she loves chocolate. She supports Vianne in the fight against repression and like Vianne, has a great appetite for life.

To Vianne, Armande reminds her of her own mother, with the same bright, wicked eyes and the same blend of wistfulness and cynicism. Vianne is the only one that Armande can trust to rebuild a relationship with her grandson and to plan a last birthday feast. Their friendship is one of a shared love of life and independence.
